Gentle And Lowly | Dane Ortlund

Gentle And Lowly

I think many Christian books have a specific demographic in mind, but this is one I would recommend to everyone. It is theologically rich, but written in an accessible way.

Part of what makes this book such a gem is that the author brings in voices from the past – pastors and theologians like John Owen, John Bunyan, Thomas Goodwin and Richard Sibbes. As he says in the introductions “we are neither the first nor the smartest to read the Bible.” The wisdom in these older writings is often buried by archaic language, but this book bridges the gap for a modern audience.

Yet it’s far from a dry history lesson. Here’s another quote: “When you look at the glorious older saints in your church, how do you think they got there? Sound doctrine, yes. Resolute obedience, without a doubt. Suffering without becoming cynical, for sure. But maybe another reason, maybe the deepest reason, is that they have, over time, been won over in their deepest affections to a gentle Savior.” (pg 99)

A quick note for those who might be concerned that this book only looks at the “soft” parts of Jesus – after all, as C.S. Lewis would say, He is not a tame lion! I think you will find the author’s approach careful, Biblical, and balanced. The author does not ignore the fierce portraits of Christ such as the ones we find in Revelation. The result is not to domesticate Jesus or to make us comfortable with sin. Part of the great paradox of the gospel is that it is the very gentleness and tenderness of Christ toward the sinners that come to Him that makes us hate our sin all the more.

10/10 recommend. It was a real encouragement and worth a read (and a re-read).
